Display Bandwidth Calculator: HDMI, DP & USB-C
Estimate video payload from resolution, refresh rate, color depth, chroma and DSC. Compare specific HDMI, DisplayPort and USB-C modes or a documented dock budget.

This is a payload estimate, not a compatibility guarantee. Actual timings, color packing, audio, source, display, cable, adapters and DSC support can change the result. The connection table describes specific modes, not every port carrying that version name.

Thunderbolt / USB4 / Documented payload capacity (Gbps)
USB-C is a connector, not a bandwidth rating. Thunderbolt and USB4 share transport bandwidth with other data. For a dock, enter the documented DisplayPort tunnel budget below; do not use the advertised 40/80 Gbps as guaranteed video payload.

How video payload is estimated
Active payload is width × height × refresh rate × bits per pixel × stream count. RGB/4:4:4 uses three channels; 4:2:2 uses two and 4:2:0 uses one and a half in this sampling model. Add the selected blanking allowance, then divide by the DSC ratio. The 3% default is an assumption, not an exact timing standard.
Compare a specific connection mode
The table uses video payload budgets, after modeled link encoding. HDMI FRL modes do not all run at 48 Gbps; DisplayPort HBR and UHBR modes have different capacities. Less than 8% reserve is marked tight as a planning heuristic. A DSC fit still requires compatible source, receiver and path support.
USB-C, Thunderbolt and USB4 docks
A USB-C connector may carry two or four DisplayPort lanes, or a tunneled display link. Thunderbolt/USB4 headline rates include shared transport rather than a dedicated video payload guarantee. Use the dock’s documented DP budget in the custom field. Multiple streams are treated as sharing one budget; the calculator does not infer a dock’s MST topology.
What the estimate cannot test
This page does not query your GPU, monitor EDID or cable certification. Exact video timings, protocol-specific 4:2:2 packing, audio, adapters and negotiated modes may consume different bandwidth. Newer advertised raw link rates, including HDMI 2.2, should not be entered as payload without documented conversion. Test the real equipment and consult its specifications.
FAQ
How much does 4K 144 Hz at 10-bit RGB need?
With the example 3% allowance, one stream needs about 36.91 Gbps uncompressed, or 12.30 Gbps at DSC 3:1. Actual timings and equipment support still matter.
Does HDMI 2.1 always mean a 48 Gbps link?
No. Check the implemented link mode and supported formats for the specific port and device. The calculator lists separate FRL budgets rather than assuming every port provides the maximum.
Can I use DSC on any connection that fits?
No. Both endpoints and the complete path must support a compatible DSC mode. Links not modeled with DSC are marked unsupported even if the compressed number is below their budget.
