100 vs 120 Inch Projector Screen: Will It Fit Your Room?

A 120-inch screen adds 44% more image area than a 100-inch screen, but it also needs more wall space. Check the visible dimensions, seating position and projector placement before choosing.

The size difference is bigger than it sounds

Both numbers are diagonals. With the same 16:9 shape, moving from 100 to 120 inches increases width and height by 20%, so area rises by 44%. The extra visible width is about 17.4 inches, or 44.3 cm. That is enough to conflict with speakers, a door or the edge of a cabinet even when the diagonal sounds manageable.

Measure the wall, not just the empty rectangle

Get the manufacturer’s overall dimensions before ordering. A fixed-frame screen is wider than its image. A floor-rising screen needs room for the case and for its full raised height. Leave space for doors, curtains and speakers; do not cover a speaker with ordinary screen fabric and assume it will behave like an acoustically transparent screen.

Seating distance is not throw distance

Seating distance runs from your eyes to the image. Throw distance normally runs from the projector lens to the screen plane. For a conventional lens, throw distance is approximately image width multiplied by throw ratio. At a ratio of 1.5, these sizes need roughly 3.32 m and 3.99 m respectively. Those are examples, not installation recommendations: zoom range, lens shift and model-specific reference points still matter.

For an ultra-short-throw projector, use the installation drawing for that exact model and screen size. The gap behind the case is not the same measurement as lens-to-screen distance. Check cabinet depth and the vertical offset too; a screen that fits the wall can still be too high once the projector is positioned.

Bigger can mean dimmer

If the same light output is spread evenly over 44% more area, illuminance falls to about 69% of the smaller image, roughly 31% lower. This is a geometric illustration, not a measured brightness claim. Actual results depend on the projector’s mode and zoom, screen gain, viewing angle and room light. A brighter wall-sized image is not guaranteed just because the projector can focus at 120 inches.

Try the outline from your normal seat

Mark the two image rectangles with removable tape and sit where you normally watch. Include the frame, screen bottom and speaker clearance in your check. If you already have the projector, test both image sizes in your normal lighting. Choose 100 when 120 compromises placement or brightness; choose 120 when the larger picture feels comfortable and the full installation works, not simply because the wall is wide enough.

Can my projector fill either screen from the same position?

Only if its optical zoom and supported throw range allow it. Check the exact model’s calculator or installation table. Digital zoom or cropping is not a substitute for the correct optical placement.
